Per the Burch Fellow homepage:

Vanessa Bowman-Allen is a junior majoring in Environmental Studies with a minor in City and Regional Planning from San Diego, California. Her interests are centered on climate change and planning sustainable cities that will adapt to our global needs. She will be travelling to the city of Los Baños in the Philippine Islands, where they are committed to discovering innovative ways to use bamboo as a means to mitigate the effects of climate change. There she will be working with BambooPhil, an NGO who is committed to “harnessing the best of bamboo science & technology for people and the environment.” During her eight week project she will not only learn about the physical properties of bamboo, but she will visit bamboo experimental stations and processing plants. She will also aid in the formulation of a bamboo reforestation plan for the local watersheds of Laguna de Bay, the biggest fresh water lake in the Philippines. Finally, Vanessa will help build a library out of bamboo, and research the creation/use of bamboo transportation vehicles. Upon her return, Vanessa plans on working with the University and surrounding communities to highlight and integrate bamboo’s potential beyond its current use as an ornamental plant.
